BLUEMED’s participation in the “Mediterranean Sustainable Tourism Convention 2019”

BLUEMED project, participated in the Mediterranean Sustainable Tourism Convention 2019, that took place at 5-7 June in Barcelona and was organised by the Barcelona Provincial Council and the BleuTourMed project, with the support of CETT - UB (School of Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy of the University of Barcelona) and Hotel Alimara Barcelona.

The convention aimed at being the reference event for sustainable tourism in the MED area with more than 70 speakers and 200 participants from public and private tourism stakeholders. It aimed at fostering sound debate on key topics to promote more sustainable tourism and to provide a platform to showcase solutions developed by MED Sustainable Tourism Community projects to challenges in the Mediterranean; thus, capitalising the results of modular projects. The Convention was also the occasion to discover solutions to current challenges developed by the 18 territorial cooperation projects of the MED Sustainable Tourism Community, active in 12 northern Mediterranean countries involving almost 200 organisations.

During that event BLUEMED partners had the opportunity to represent the project in the exhibition area with the following materials: a) three copies of ancient molds / findings characterizing the project’s activities and b) a Virtual Reality System (i.e. a small display with one smartphone) which allows users to live a virtual experience inside the reconstructed 3D model of the underwater site. The exhibition was accessible at the open space leading the conference room throughout the day, where participants were available to check our project.

Additionally, Mrs Aggeliki Veneti, BLUEMED project coordinator, participated in the thematic parallel sessions “4b. Coastal and maritime tourism in the Blue Economy” as a panelist, where she had the opportunity to present the BLUEMED’s contribution in a more Sustainable & Responsible Coastal and Maritime Tourism in the MED Area. The Convention closed with a programme of site visits, where participants had the opportunity to experience and learn about what sustainable tourism means in Barcelona and its surrounding territory.
